The Greater Latrobe Men’s volleyball team returned to section action Thursday night hosting the Norwin Knights. The Cat’s started out on fire besting the Knights in set one by a 25 – 14 score but could not keep the momentum into the second set. Latrobe dug themselves a 7-point hole in set two, but battled back to tie the score at 19. The scored changed hands back and forth with Norwin gaining he final advantage 23 – 25. Sets three and four were a split with Norwin taking set three 17 – 25 and the Cats winning set four 25 – 18. Set 5 was another seesaw battle from the beginning all the way to the end, but that end was a 12 – 15 loss for the Wildcats dropping the match 3 set to 2.
Latrobe’s outside hitters Frankie Newill and Enzo Rodi paced the varsity squad with Newill recording 18 kills and Rodi collecting 16 kills. Middle hitter Will Burkhard added 10 kills on the night with Brennan Ward, Mike Brackney and Tyler Ryan combining for 13 additional kills 8, 3, and 2 respectively. Finding other avenues to score points Tyle Nelson and Frankie Newill produced points from the service line with 3 aces for Nelson and 2 for Newill. Mike Brackney added to his points total for the match by chalking up 8 blocks.
Senior Setter Tyler Ryan ran the Latrobe offense distributing 42 assists to the six Wildcat attackers.
On the defensive side, eight Wildcat’s got in on the action of denying points to the Knights, led by Dante Fresure with 18 digs. Antonio Kantor and Tyler Nelson each had 9 digs with 14 additional digs posted by Frankie Newill, Tyler Ryan, Brennan Ward and Enzo Rodi 8, 3, 2, and 1 .
For the second match in arow the Latrobe JV took their match to the full three sets, and again were victorious 25 – 22, 22 – 25 and
15 – 6. Sam Kiesel set the bar for the JV offense with 8 kills followed by Rocco Marino with 6 kills of his own. Tyler Mondock and Isiac Wazo chipped in 3 kills each and Bryson Hill and Tyler Nelson added a kill each. IN addition to his kill totals, Marino also led the JV squad in blocks with 4.
Stepping into the setting role due to illness Tyler Nelson was responsible for 20 assists in directing the JV offense and racked up 7 service aces for his efforts. .
Ruben Rojas topped the JV defensive stats with 16 digs, supported by the dig totals of Bryson Hill, Tyler Mondock, and Jacob Elliot 6, 5 and 3.
The Latrobe JV will participate in the North Allegheny invitational tournament Friday evening and the Varsity will compete in the North Allegheny varsity invitational on Saturday. Next week begins a brutal two week run that has the Cat’s playing seven matched in 10 days, five of which are on the road.
