The Greater Latrobe Men’s volleyball team got back on the winning path last night with a straight set victory over the Armstrong River Hawks. The Cat’s got out of the gate quickly chalking up a 25 – 8 first set victory and continued to press the advantage taking set two and three 25 – 17 and 25 – 17 to take home the win.
Senior outside hitter Frankie Newill led the Wildcat on offense for the third straight match with 10 kills, followed by fellow senior Will Burkard with 8 kills, while Enzo Rodi, Brennan Ward, Mike Brackney and Tyler Ryan added the remainder of Latrobe kills 5, 3,2 and 1.
Serving and blocking were also a large part of Latrobe’s success as Enzo Rodi Collected 3 service aces, with Antonio Kantor posting 2 and Josh Havrilla recording 1 ace. Will Burkard led the varsity squad in the blocking category with 5 rejections of Armstrong scoring attempts and was supported by the 3 blocks each from Frankie Newill, and Mike Brackney, and 2 by both Brennan Ward and Tyler Ryan.
In addition to his offensive and blocking stats, setter Tyler Ryan directed the Latrobe offense dishing out 22 assists to the Latrobe hitters.
Defensively, seniors Dante Frescura and Anotonio Kantor set the bar with 6 digs each with teammates Josh Havrilla, Tyler Nelson, Frankie Newill, Tyler Ryan. Blake Baughman and Ben Bizzak collecting 17 additional digs 4, 3,3,3,2 and 2 respectively.
Latrobe’s JV set the tone for the night with their straight set victory over the Armstrong JV 25 – 15 and 25 – 11. Tyler Mondock and Tyler Nelson tied for top scoring honors in the match with 6 kills each, Sam Kiesel added 4 kills of his own and Isiac Wazo , Rocco Marino and Josh Havrilla added 7 additional 3, 2 and 1. Waszo and Nelson also produced 4 blocks each while five JV Wildcats Tyler Nelson, Bryson Hill, Josh Havrilla, Rubin Rojas and Jacob Ellit combined for 7 service aces 2,2,1,1 and 1 respectively.
In addition to his other contributions Josh Havrilla also chalked up 21 assists distributed the ball to the JV hitters.
Defensively it was Rubin Rojas leading the way recording 8 digs followed by Josh Havrilla with 6 and Jacob Elliot with 3.
The Cat’s Tuesday match against Deer Lakes has been cancelled so the next time Latrobe will be back in action will be Thursday April 29th when they host the Norwin Knights.
