Boys Varsity Soccer earned the No.12 seed in the 2020 WPIAL Class 4A Playoffs. With the Wildcats primed for a down the stretch run, the team was forced to quarantine for two weeks. Still, the mid-season performance of the Wildcats was good enough to make the playoffs. The team traveled to play the No.5 seeded Upper St. Clair Panthers on Tuesday night. The teams played evenly over the course of the opening minutes, while adjusting to see what opportunities would be available. The Panthers nearly struck first with a shot that hit the cross bar and the threat was cleared by the Wildcats’ defense. As is often the case in a tight contest, the Panthers were able to find the net from distance, when Jack Myers finished from outside of the penalty area midway through the first half to give Upper St. Clair a lead that they would ultimately not relinquish. With the score remaining 1-0 at halftime, the Wildcats felt strong going into the second frame. The feeling was short lived when the Panthers scored two goals in the opening minutes. Myers added his second with less than a minute gone by and Ben Bacdayan added another a minute later. Bacdayan added his second midway through the half and Andrew Popp made it 5-0 Upper St. Clair with a minute remaining in the game. The Wildcats ultimately were not able to generate scoring opportunities.
The 2020 season is one to remember. As the season began, no one knew what it was going to look like with the uncertainty of COVID-19. The Boys came together to post wins in several key games to secure a spot in the post season. After an unexpected two-week quarantine, that nearly crushed their playoff hopes, they came back together and fought hard.
Remembering the team, the wins (and a tie), the camaraderie, and ultimately the good times. Final score Upper St. Clair 5 – Latrobe 0.
